Marte hits 9th inning go-ahead HRs in back-to-back Dbacks games, from each side of plate at Texas
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ketel Marte went deep for the Arizona lead with two outs in the ninth inning again against the Texas Rangers. The big swing this time came from the other side of the plate. Martel's three-run homer batting left-handed capped a two-out rally in the ninth inning for the Diamondbacks in their series finale at Texas on Wednesday, a 6-4 win that came less than 24 hours after the switch-hitter's upper-deck solo shot from the right side in the final at-bat for a 3-2 victory. 'He's one of a kind. He's just a special player. When his timing's right and his body's right, he's capable of carrying a ball club,' manager Torey Lovullo said after the All-Star second baseman's latest game-winner. 'And it was a great moment for him. The smile on his face as he was rounding the bases is something that I know we all enjoyed.' The 413-foot homer to right was Marte's fourth hit Wednesday. His first three hits were singles, one driving in their first run, off former teammate Merrill Kelly, who made his third start for the Rangers since they acquired him from Arizona at the trade deadline two weeks ago. 'What you saw today is him in a nutshell. He hits good pitches, he hits bad pitches,' said Kelly, who exited the game after six innings with a 3-2 lead. 'He can work the count, he could work the AB and punch a single into left or hurt you with a big-time homer from either side of the plate. Obviously, he proved that the last two nights. He's kind of the guy that you circle in that lineup that you don't want to beat you. ... Unfortunately, we let him beat us the last two days.' Marte's solo homer with two outs in the ninth Tuesday night, on a two-strike 79.8 mph sweeper thrown by Danny Coulombe, went 445 feet. In the series finale, Phil Maton had entered with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and struck out the first three batters he faced on nine pitches. James McCann then homered with two outs in the ninth, No. 9 batter Blaze Alexander was hit by a pitch and Geraldo Perdomo walked on four pitches before Marte went deep on a 76.4 mph curveball. Marte is hitting .297 with 23 homers and 54 RBIs in 88 games, and has an NL-best .329 batting average in road games after going 6 for 9 the last two games in Texas. He missed nearly a month early in the season with a left hamstring strain. 'I'm feeling good. My body is good, I'm healthy,' Marte said. 'He can take it to a whole new level like, you know, a league above the major leagues, and that's hard to do. There's only a few players who can do that,' Lovullo said. 'Everything happened kind of in order to lead up to that moment. He didn't let us down. ... This was a team moment, and Marte made it all happen.' Split duo Kelly and Zac Gallen, who started for Arizona on Wednesday, were the dynamic duo atop the Diamondbacks rotation when they made their run to the World Series two seasons ago that ended with a loss to the Rangers. Gallen allowed two runs over five innings in his 161st start for the Dbacks, one fewer than Kelly made during their time together. Gallen's 61 wins with Arizona are one shy of matching Kelly for the third-most in team history. Kelly, a 36-year-old right-hander who spent 7 1/2 seasons with the Diamondbacks, struck out five over six innings in his first start against them. 'It was cool. I'm glad it's over, but it was fun just seeing the guys in the box,' Kelly said. 'It's obviously a very different vantage point that I'm used to seeing them from the dugout. August 13 - Ketel Marte ripped a two-out, three-run home run in the ninth inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to stun the Texas Rangers 6-4 on Wednesday in the finale of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. Marte's home run off Phil Maton (2-4) was his fourth hit of the game and drove in Blaze Alexander (who was hit by a pitch) and Geraldo Perdomo, who had walked. James McCann began the rally with a two-out solo home run as the Diamondbacks scored four runs with two outs in the final frame to capture their second straight series. It was Marte's second game-winning homer in as many nights. He homered in the ninth on Tuesday as well to lift Arizona to a 3-2 comeback win. John Curtiss (2-0) pitched the eighth for the Diamondbacks and Andrew Saalfrank retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his first career save. Texas dropped the final two games of this set and finished its nine-game homestand with just three victories. Jake Burger had a two-run home run among his two hits while Evan Carter also had two of the Rangers' seven hits. Texas jumped to the lead in its first at bat when Carter, who was activated from the 10-day injured list just prior to the game, singled home Josh Smith after he opened the frame with a single. The Diamondbacks answered in the third with a two-out rally as Perdomo walked and stole second base before Marte drove him in with a single to left field that tied the game at 1-1. Carter was also a huge part of the Rangers' next uprising, beginning the fourth with a double and then trotting home in front of Burger after the latter smashed his two-run homer. Arizona trimmed its deficit to 3-2 in the fifth on a Perdomo solo home run to right center field. The Diamondbacks pushed to tie the game in the inning as Marte and Corbin Carroll singled, but Marte was thrown out at home on Adrian Del Castillo's single to right to end the inning. After that, the Diamondbacks did not have a hit and had just one baserunner until McCann homered with two outs in the ninth to cut the Texas lead to one run. Marte's homer off Danny Coulombe (2-1) followed consecutive strikeouts of Jose Herrera and Geraldo Perdomo. Perdomo's was the fifth looking for Arizona among 11 strikeouts, after which manager Torey Lovullo protested and was ejected by home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson.

August 13 - Ketel Marte's solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning was the difference as the Arizona Diamondbacks came from behind to beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Tuesday in the middle game of a three-game interleague set in Arlington, Texas. Marte's long ball came off Rangers reliever Danny Coulombe (2-1), who had not allowed a home run all season. Marte had two hits and two RBIs as the Diamondbacks won for the fourth time in their past five games. Tyler Locklear also had two of Arizona's eight hits and Blaze Alexander added a solo homer. Arizona reliever Jalen Beeks (3-1) reaped the reward for Marte's clutch homer after allowing a walk and striking out one over 1 2/3 innings. Juan Morillo pitched a perfect ninth to earn his first save of the season. Texas managed just four hits -- only one after the third inning -- and lost for the fifth time in six games. The Rangers took the lead in the second with Joc Pederson singling off Arizona starter Anthony DeSclafani, going to second on a single by Wyatt Langford, stealing third base and then coming home on an RBI groundout by Adolis Garcia. The Diamondbacks answered in the third when Alexander led off the frame with a home run into the stands in left-center field, his fourth of the season. Texas retook the lead in the bottom of the third. Kyle Higashioka walked, went to second on a single by Josh Smith, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly. Arizona tied it again in the seventh thanks to a pair of Rangers errors. Reliever Robert Garcia tried to flip the ball over his shoulder after partially knocking down a grounder from Jose Herrera that became an infield single, allowing Herrera to move to second. Josh Jung then booted Gerlado Perdomo's sacrifice bunt, with Herrera going to third. Marte came through when he squibbed a grounder to Semien at second base and beat the throw to first as Herrera raced across the plate to make it 2-2. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was ejected by home plate umpire Nate Tomlinson in the ninth inning for arguing balls and strikes.
